PET OWNER FAQ’s

Here we answer some common questions asked by pet owners in our hospitals.

At Veterinary Specialists Ireland, we believe the strongest part of our hospital is not only the medicine we practise, but the people behind it. 💙

Today, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate one of our own.
A huge congratulations and our warmest wishes to Dr Katerina Rysaki, DVM, ECVS Resident in Small Animal Surgery, on her upcoming wedding ! 💍✨

To mark the occasion, the VSI team came together at the end of the day to surprise her and share a small moment of celebration as a team. A reminder that beyond the operating theatres, consultation rooms and busy hospital days, we are a close-knit community that truly cares for one another.

From all of us at VSI, congratulations Katerina, we wish you a lifetime of happiness. 💙

Meet Calli, a lovely Labradoodle 💙

Recently, this brave girl donated blood to help save lives.

Just like in human medicine, blood donations are vital in emergency and critical care situations from trauma cases to complex surgeries.

We are incredibly grateful to cats and dogs like Calli (and their wonderful owners) who make this possible.

When amputation becomes the best option 🐾

Amputation is carefully considered and is often a last-resort treatment when a limb can no longer be successfully treated.

It may be necessary following severe trauma, infection, certain tumours or significant limb damage.

While it can seem daunting, dogs often adapt remarkably well to life on three legs, especially after a hindlimb amputation. They can continue to walk, run, play and enjoy life.

Ultimately, the goal is simple: to relieve pain and give the patient the best possible quality of life. 🐶

📍 If you ever have concerns about your pet’s mobility or pain, don’t hesitate to speak with your vet.

🙏🚨We desperately need some canine heroes today 🚨🙏

This morning we admitted 3 critically-ill dogs into our Summerhill ICU who need DEA 1 negative type blood transfusions

If your pet is eligible to donate blood and is a known negative blood type or one of the below breeds and you can help within the next 24 hours, we would love to hear from you 🙏

About 30% of dogs are negative blood types - Greyhounds, Lurchers, Airedales, German Shepherds, Pointers and Weimaraners tend to have negative (universal donor) blood types

Your dog must be 1-8 years of age, in excellent health, not on medication, never received a blood transfusion, and >15 kg

Our team, our patients and their very worried families would be extremely grateful for your help, and if your pet isn't eligible we would appreciate if you could share 🙏

You can contact our blood donor team on 046 9557551 or at info@vetspecialists.ie

From critical to cuddles – well done Allie! 💙

When Allie was admitted to our Critical Care Service, she was severely ill with an acute kidney injury. Conventional treatments had failed, leaving dialysis as her only option

Allie underwent two haemodialysis treatments, allowing her blood to be filtered while giving her kidneys time to rest and recover

With round-the-clock nursing care and so much TLC, Allie became brighter, started eating, and her kidney function bounced back 🙏🥹

A huge thank you to Allie's dedicated family for trusting us with her care, and to our incredible Emergency, Dialysis and Nursing teams for working together every step of the way

We wish you a continued smooth recovery Allie! ❤️

It is with the deepest sadness that we share the passing of Dickie

Dickie had been bravely battling a terminal illness, and last week it became clear that he was ready to cross the Rainbow Bridge 🌈

Dickie was a foundation of our hospital and our family, joining rounds every morning and evening, helping finish any unwanted meals, and providing much needed moral support to countless inpatients and pet parents ❤️

He saved multiple lives through regular blood donation until advancing age precluded him

Dickie was a much loved staff member, the best child's playmate and a trusted confidante

He will be missed more than we can put into words

We have the greatest empathy for every pet family that has to go through the heartache 💔🌈

When we started Ireland's first small animal dialysis programme just over a year ago, we invested in infrastructure for not one but two dialysis platforms

This incredible service has gone from strength to strength and today we reached another milestone when we had two patients undergoing dialysis simultaneously to treat their kidney injuries 🙌

Blood purification therapies such as dialysis are a literal lifesaver, helping to take the place of the kidneys or liver while the body recovers from illness or injury, and removing harmful toxins, inflammation or immune complexes

This lifesaving service simply wouldn't be possible without the incredible ECC Specialists and nurses who go above and beyond, completing rigorous additional training and committing to working the unsociable hours this service often demands 🙏

Pets and people don't decide when to get sick and we are committed to ensuring they can always access the most advanced care as and when they need it ❤️‍🩹

Thank you to everyone who supports us and shares our vision 🥹
