Job Description

 You would be joining our Internal Medicine team, led by Dr. Ferran Valls Sanchez, at Veterinary Specialists Ireland, in Summerhill, with occasional visits to our sister hospital at Veterinary Specialists Cork.

STRUCTURE
  • General hours – Monday Friday 7.30 am-end of day (5.30-6 pm)
  • Rotation in the emergency and critical care service 1 in every 6 weeks (days may be allocated according to rota needs)
  • Rotation in ultrasound 1 in every 6 weeks
  • 4-weeks of external rotation of your choice, to strengthen the basis of other areas (e.g. neurology, clinical pathology…).
  • 2-weeks of independent study (1-study week per 6-months or 2-weeks in the second half of the internship).
ROLE
  • You will initially consult with our Internal Medicine Specialists and then under their direct supervision
  • You will perform procedures alongside our Specialists, and later do them under direct supervision.
  • You will triage upcoming cases to optimise workflow and care (e.g. inform team of specific requirements, check necessary equipment, timing of appointment).
  • 2-3 week nights on call for internal medicine emergencies and inpatients with back-up of Specialist
  • 2-weekends a month being in charge of internal medicine emergencies and inpatients with Specialist back-up. Once our duties are fulfilled you can be at home and come in as needed.
  • Assist with clinical/education activities for referring vets.
EDUCATION
  • Internal Medicine Club once a week
  • Lecture by a specialist/residency-trained once a month.
  • Internal medicine mentorship meeting once a month.
  • You will prepare a topic for a 45-minute seminar every 2 months.
  • We will try to get you involved in a research project.
  • Assignment of a non-medical mentor for any needs you have.
  • General hospital teaching activities: practical rounds once weekly, DI rounds twice a month, intern/resident seminar once weekly, journal club once weekly
OTHER INFORMATION
  • Accommodation – we can provide assitances with locating accommodation as required
  • Salary: €29000 per annum
  • CPD allowance: €500
  • Holiday entitlement: 20 days per annum
REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY:
Mandatory
  • Passionate about veterinary medicine, and even more about internal medicine
  • Team player
  • Kind and compassionate to colleagues, clients and patients
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication
  • Eligible to apply for registration with the Veterinary College of Ireland (VCI)
Ideal:
  • Previous rotating internship (in any country)
WHAT YOU DON’T NEED
  • You do not need to have many years of experience
  • You don’t need to have publications.
  • You don’t need work experience outside of your country.
  • You only need to be passionate, kind and open to learn and teach
